Everything from cars to guns to the actual population is pre-programmed. This was made apparent in the fifth episode of season 3 when Serac straight up flexed on the Brazilian president to open the episode. This, if it makes any sense to you, is exactly why Westworld gets a pass when it comes to being perhaps the most “confusing” show on television. It’s one of those shows you can spend hours theorizing about, except unlike past seasons, the full scope of what is possible is still somewhat beyond imagination. In transitioning from one world to another, Westworld broadened its possibilities from a puzzle in the desert to an endless, technological escape room that we just can’t seem to crack. It’s almost as if we’re watching an entirely different television show. Season 3 lives in said futuristic world (or futureworld?). Westworld’s third season is a long way from the first two seasons, in which the futuristic world the series took place in was only briefly introduced. Most of the misunderstanding comes from not knowing exactly where the showrunners are going with the series. It’s not that Westworld is poorly written or confusing for confusing’s sake, but purposefully constructed to be a convoluted journey that we simply can’t predict the ending of. While this may be viewed as a negative, somehow, this series gets a pass. To the average viewer, Westworld is confusing. Westworld is quite possibly the most confusing show on televison, yet we tune in every week.
